Cleaners SW9 Health and Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the commitments and standards of Cleaners SW9 for protecting the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our cleaning activities. We aim to deliver high quality cleaning services while maintaining a safe and healthy working environment across all sites where we operate.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Cleaners SW9 is committed to preventing accidents, work-related ill health, and unsafe practices. Our objectives are to identify and control hazards, reduce risks to an acceptable level, and promote a positive health and safety culture within the company and on every client premises we service.
We will continually improve our health and safety performance, ensuring our working practices reflect current legislation, industry best practice, and the specific requirements of the environments in which we work.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management has overall responsibility for implementing, monitoring, and reviewing this Health and Safety Policy. Management will:
Ensure that health and safety is considered in all business decisions, including the planning of cleaning contracts, selection of equipment, and allocation of resources.
Provide and maintain safe systems of work, safe equipment, and appropriate protective measures for all cleaning tasks, including routine and one-off specialist jobs.
Ensure that all cleaning staff receive suitable induction, information, instruction, and training to carry out their work safely and competently.
Conduct and review risk assessments for all significant hazards associated with our services, including use of chemicals, work at height, manual handling, and lone working.
Monitor compliance with this policy through supervision, inspections, and regular review of accidents, incidents, and near misses.
Employee Responsibilities
Every employee of Cleaners SW9 has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions at work. All staff must:
Follow the instructions, training, and safe working procedures provided by Cleaners SW9 and the client site rules where applicable.
Use equipment, machinery, and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects or concerns immediately to a supervisor or manager.
Handle cleaning chemicals in accordance with training and product information, never mixing products or decanting them into unlabelled containers.
Report all accidents, injuries, near misses, and unsafe conditions so that appropriate action can be taken and future risks reduced.
Refrain from any behaviour that could put themselves, colleagues, clients, or the public at risk, including horseplay, misuse of equipment, or ignoring safety warnings.
Safe Use of Cleaning Chemicals
Cleaners SW9 recognises the potential hazards associated with cleaning chemicals and is committed to safe selection, storage, and use of all substances. We will:
Use professional-grade, clearly labelled products and store them securely when not in use, away from children, pets, food preparation areas, and sources of heat.
Ensure that staff are trained in the safe use of each product, including required personal protective equipment, ventilation requirements, and correct dilution ratios.
Provide clear instructions on avoiding skin and eye contact, inhalation of vapours, and accidental ingestion, and on what to do in the event of a spill or exposure.
Never mix incompatible chemicals and always dispose of waste and empty containers in a safe and environmentally responsible manner, in line with local guidance.
Equipment Safety and Maintenance
All equipment used by Cleaners SW9, including vacuum cleaners, steam cleaners, floor machines, ladders, and smaller tools, will be maintained in a safe condition. We will:
Carry out regular checks and servicing of equipment and remove from use any item that is damaged, defective, or unsafe.
Provide training on safe operation, including electrical safety, cable management, noise control, and correct use of attachments and accessories.
Ensure that only trained and authorised personnel use specialist equipment, particularly for floor treatment, carpet cleaning, and elevated work platforms where applicable.
Manual Handling and Work at Height
Cleaners SW9 understands that lifting, carrying, and repetitive movements can cause injury if not performed correctly. To minimise manual handling risks, we will:
Assess manual handling tasks and, where possible, use trolleys, carts, or other aids to move heavy equipment and supplies.
Train staff in safe lifting techniques, posture, and task planning to reduce strain on the back, shoulders, and joints.
For work at height, such as cleaning high surfaces, we will use suitable, stable equipment and prohibit unsafe practices, including standing on furniture or makeshift platforms.
Lone Working and Security
Some cleaning activities may take place outside normal business hours or with limited supervision. To protect lone workers, Cleaners SW9 will:
Assess the risks associated with working alone and implement control measures, including clear communication and escalation procedures.
Ensure lone workers know how to secure the premises, manage access, and respond to unexpected visitors, alarms, or emergencies.
Encourage staff to remain vigilant, avoid confrontation, and report any concerns regarding security or personal safety.
Emergency Procedures
Cleaners SW9 will cooperate with client emergency arrangements and ensure staff are aware of the procedures for each site. This includes:
Understanding fire evacuation routes, alarm points, assembly areas, and the location of fire extinguishers where information is provided by the client.
Knowing how to respond to chemical spills, accidental damage, or injuries, and who to notify in the event of an emergency.
Ensuring that first aid arrangements are clear and that incidents are recorded promptly and accurately for investigation and follow up.
Consultation, Training, and Policy Review
Cleaners SW9 engages with employees on health and safety matters, encourages feedback, and takes account of concerns raised by staff and clients. We provide ongoing training and refresher sessions to ensure that knowledge remains current and relevant to the work undertaken.
This Health and Safety Policy will be reviewed regularly and updated as necessary in response to changes in legislation, industry standards, or our working practices. The latest version will be communicated to all staff and made available to clients on request.
Commitment to Continuous Improvement
Cleaners SW9 is committed to continual improvement of our health and safety performance. By learning from experience, investing in training and equipment, and working closely with our clients, we aim to provide cleaning services that are both effective and safe in every environment where we operate.
